1. MYTH–“Turbines are noisy.”
TRUTH: Wind turbines produce nothing more than a light whooshing or swishing, which is much quieter than inside car noises, stereo music, and the ever pesky jet airplane sound. Truth be told, the sound of blowing wind is often louder. At an appropriate setback, the sound of a wind turbine is equivalent to the sound of a kitchen refrigerator.

2. MYTH–“Wind turbines harm wildlife.”
TRUTH: For every 10,000 birds killed by human activities, less than one death is caused by a wind turbine. Although buildings and cats are far bigger threats, the wind industry takes potential wildlife impacts quite seriously and developers engage in extensive site analyses to minimize the interaction of wind parks with wildlife.

3. MYTH–“Nearby residents will be affected by shadow flicker and interference with television and other communication signals.”
TRUTH: Interference is rare and easily avoided through upgrading antennae or installing relays to transmit signals around wind farms. Shadow flicker is a moving shadow cast when the sun is behind revolving turbine blades. US wind farm sites are generally not located in high enough latitudes to encounter shadow flicker. For those sites that are affected, the potential for flicker can be calculated prior to construction and turbines can be sited to minimize impacts on residences.

4. MYTH–“Turbines are ugly.”
TRUTH: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Careful design of a wind project can alleviate many visual concerns.

5. MYTH-“Wind farms do no benefit local communities.”
TRUTH: There is no evidence that the presence of a wind farm decreases property value, and in some cases it increases the value. Economic development of a new wind farm increases employment from construction and pumps money into the local economy through services needed to support a large construction project. Furthermore community-based projects, such as those developed by National Wind, encourage local involvement and ownership in the wind projects.

6. MYTH–“Wind turbines aren’t safe.”
TRUTH: Issues such as ice throws, turbines collapsing, and blade throws are virtually unheard of. The utility-scale turbines are certified to engineering standards and operate with sensors to alert the control system if it needs to suddenly shut down.

7. MYTH–“Wind turbines are unreliable and inefficient.”
TRUTH: No power plant generates at 100% name place capacity 100% of the time. Wind turbines generate electricity 65-80% of the time, although the output amount is variable. Wind turbines are efficient, generating electricity from a natural renewable resource. The current production of 17 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity can power 1.6 million average American homes year round.

8. MYTH–“Wind turbines interfere with farming.”
TRUTH: There is minimal land-use change associated with wind farms. Only about half an acre is needed for the actual turbine and access roads. Animals can graze up to the fencing around access roads and right up to the base of turbines. Access roads can often be run along existing fencing to avoid isolating pieces of crop or grazing land.

9. MYTH–“Wind energy is expensive.”
TRUTH: Wind energy is now in a range that is competitive with power from new conventional power plants. The upfront capital cost of wind energy is more expensive than traditional technologies such as natural gas, however there are no fuel costs. Over time, the cost of wind power is very competitive with that of other energy sources. In fact, wind power is the second cheapest source of NEW energy generation, after natural gas.

10. MYTH–“Wind farms have a negative effect on the environment.”
TRUTH: As with the construction of any man-made facility, wind energy developments do change the area environment. But wind power’s impacts on the environment are not as negative as other energy developments. Wind energy is clean energy, operating without air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, waste, thermal water pollution, or the necessity to mine for or transport fuel inputs.
