Beniamino Pisati’s prize winning photo “Energy y Nature” taken in the AndalucĂa region of Spain

Today people are gathered at thousands of events worldwide to celebrate Global Wind Day. An awareness campaign to highlight the benefits of wind energy, Global Wind Day’s message is simple: wind works. Conferences, exhibitions and workshops are being conducted to promote the advantages of wind power, such as its effect in mitigating climate changes and the freedom from dependency on fossil fuels that it allows. Beyond talks and lectures, some events are offering wind farm tours, marathons and shows. The winners of the Wind Energy Photo Contest were also recently announced in conjunction with the day’s celebrations.

In the United States, AWEA is using today to promote a national Renewable Electricity Standard (RES). A progressive national RES will require utilities to purchase 25% of their electricity from renewable sources by 2025, creating almost 300,000 jobs and reducing global warming pollutants from power plants by 2 percent, a reduction equivalent to taking 43.5 million cars off the road. AWEA is encouraging everybody to submit photos to their visual petition and to ask their representatives to pass a strong federal RES through Power of Wind.
